Abstract:
Water resources are increasingly becoming scarce in Ewaso Ng’iro North river basin just as in other basins of the world. As a result water resource competition is the most important single factor inhibiting economic growth and generating resource use conflicts. The problem has been cited as one, not of scarcity per se, but one of failure to manage the available water resource sustainably. This is supported by the fact that a lot of the flood flows of the river system are lost as they are not for use during the low flow periods. Similarly, the potential for rainwater harvesting is high and it is estimated that it could meet household demands for as many as 330 days every year. This however requires embracing the appropriate technologies and development of adequate storage facilities.
